THE BASIC RULES ENLROC ABIDE BY WHEN GREEN LANEING

1. Only ever drive greenlanes that have known rights – after studying the relevant Ordnance Survey map. Check with the local county council.

2. Avoid badly rutted/sodden tracks. You’ll only make them worse and slow their recovery.

3. Drive slowly (max 12mph). Stop for walkers or horses (always switch off your engine for the latter).

4. Travel in groups of four vehicles or less.

5. Don’t damage trees or hedgerows, except for sympathetically cutting back any overhanging branches that get in the way of the lane.

6. Take recovery gear/spade in case you get stuck. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged.

7. Don’t travel alone.

8. Open gates should be left open – and closed ones should be closed again after you have gone through. It only takes seconds.

9. Take litter home. Ensure you supervise dogs and children at all times, especially near livestock.

10. Avoid all waterways unless there’s an obvious right of way.

11. Avoid confrontation with other lane users. Don’t argue. Explain politely that you are there legally.

12. Report all obstructions/fly tipping to the county council at earliest opportunity.
